Internship at Clarington Museums and Archives

I completed a Collections-based internship at Clarington Museums and Archives, located in Bowmanville, ON, for the summer semester of Fleming College’s Museum Management and Curatorship program. This internship was based around a collections reorganization project led by guidelines developed through the Canadian Conservation Institute’s Re-Org program. My tasks focused on developing the initial stages of a collections review while working with the Curator to make future recommendations and guidelines.

As I was one of two MMC collections interns at this site, each of us focused on our own specialized collection research – I looked at the doll collection, which included 4000+ doll-based artifacts that had accumulated for over 50 years. I developed an Ideal Collection which focused on honing the collection for the musem’s mandate, created deaccessioning procedures (which I had the opportunity to see fully utilized and integrated into the museum), and collection review guidelines. Overall, I reviewed 500+ artifacts with recommedations based on my artifact-specific research, Ideal Collection, and knowledge of the museum’s collecting practices.

I also developed a temporary exhibit, The Home Front: Wartime Clarington, which focused on activities during the World Wars within Clarington, and assisted with a larger exhibit, Puttin’ On The Ritz – Theatre and Entertainment in Clarington.

Skills Demonstrated:

  • Self-guided work – developing project deadlines, details, and sharing final results
  • Policy and procedural knowledge – utilizing museum goals and visions to create procedures
  • Artifact care – developing care guidelines on specialized collections, and re-housing artifacts
  • Team player – initiative to consistently learn and assist coworkers for the museum’s success
